On September 11, 2001, four commercial aircraft were hijacked in a series of coordinated attacks, on the World Trade Center in New York City, and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. 2,997 people were killed and over 6,000 were injured in the attacks.
Team members at Piedmont Airlines and Allegheny Airlines, the regional subsidiaries of U.S. Airways, will never forget that day. Our team at DCA recounts the horror of seeing smoke rising from the Pentagon just across the Potomac River. Airports across the country were evacuated, flights were immediately grounded, many crews were left stranded, and operation’s control had to develop a plan for how to get everyone safely back home.
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the attacks on September 11 2001, we created this short documentary project to capture team member stories from that day. The final product required us to interview team members from across the organization in a very short, two week timeline, and gather as much supporting archival footage as possible. The final product is inspiring, emotional and highly informational. We rarely consider just how close DCA airport was from the crash site at the pentagon, and this video documents how team members responded in real time.
